Kyoto (京都, Kyōto), unlike the rest of the part of Japan, remains the best preserved historical cities in Japan. It is located in the Kansai region which famous for its numerous temples, shrines, gardens, imperial palaces and traditional wooden houses. The formal traditions geisha or female entertainers can also be found in the GION district.

EAT

SUSHI

CONVEYOR BELT SUSHI

KYOTO FOOD-3

This was our first conveyor belt sushi in Kyoto and we came in without any plan. This took us nearly 2 hrs to find any restaurant that has running sushi. Never regret to step in here.

Musashi is a running sushi train that served with many varieties of fresh and good quality sushi. It is so nice to sit in front of the chefs to watch them preparing the dishes. It is very affordable and charged at its own fixed price per plate.

They really made a very palatable sushi which made me miss it so much. I have to emphasise that their Tamogo Egg Sushi is highly recommended. MUST TRY if you are shortlisting in your foodie itinerary.

RAMEN

GOGYO RAMEN

GOGYA KYOTO-2

Just around the corner of Nishiki Market (a popular place with lots of street food), there is a ramen noodle restaurant called Gogyo Ramen (五行). It was once the former home of a Kyoto Geisha named Oyuki (as known as Morgan O-Yuki) who was married to George Denison Morgan, nephew of J.P. Morgan.

Based on those well-known bloggers, the queue normally took about 40 mins. But we were lucky as we did what typical Singaporean did. Queue before it opened.

It is a sit-down indoor restaurant and the areas are really compact so cannot cater too many people. But people will take their time to gorge down the hot soup.

GOGYA KYOTO-12
Appetizer

Hence, there is a cover charge of ¥400 (SGD$5.00) to pay per head that comes with 1 small bowl of their appetizer. This cover charge is not stated anywhere in the shop and menu. We were only informed by the waitress after we settled down inside.

GOGYA KYOTO-6
Kogashi Soya Sauce Ramen

They are famous for its specialty “Burnt Miso Ramen” that cost ¥880 (SGD$11.00) which cooked under the heat of 300°C lard with miso or soy based broth. It covers with a layer of black oil, specks of char and with a smokey aroma. Its taste is rich and heavy.

GOGYA KYOTO-5
Shoyu Tonkotsu Ramen

If you don’t really like the rich and heavy taste, can consider the lighter version of Shoyu Tonkotsu Ramen that cost ¥880 (SGD$11.00).

Gyoza

Other than the main meal, we also ordered their famous side dish “Gyoza”.

DESSERT

1) KYOTO’S BAUMKUCHEN

KYOTO FOOD-1
Baumkuchen

Baumkuchen (Kyoubaamu) is a spongy layered thick roll cake with extremely thin layers cream in between that baked in the shape of a cylinder. It is originated from German in a variety of spit cake which is a traditional pastry throughout many European countries and it is now a popular dessert in Japan. I can’t forget how delicious it is. The texture is so smooth that it almost melted in my mouth and the level of sweetness is just nice.
